Today's #SaturdayShoutOut is my dear friend, Shanique Hughes! @yogawithshanique
Shaniqueis a Yogi 🧘🏽♀️, Artist 🎨, Chef 👩🏽🍳, Dog Mama 🐶, wife 💑, and is one of the kindest, sweetest, most selfless, talented, and humble humans I've ever met.
Shanique and I met many years ago while working together at the same company. Her creativity brought reshreshingly new vibrance and colourful changes to the company's somewhat mundane social media at the time.
I would stop by her desk each day and check out all the different artsy ornaments and playful designs that she had laid out. In addition, she sometimes had these unique little homemade snacks, and being the foodie that I am, she let me sample some, and OOH CHILD 🤤 homegirl can cook! Eventually, she brought snacks in bigger batches for everyone, which often caused traffic in the kitchen. ALSO, Shanique practiced yoga during lunch, which encouraged some of the other ladies to practice with her.
We became pretty good friends, and eventually became carpool buddies. During those drives, I learned that Shanique is quite the one line jokester as well 🤣. Also, her taste in music is incredible 🎶! But I also learned that there was so much depth to Shanique than the sweet and happy girl everyone saw on the outside.
Having a rough childhood, among many other many hardships growing up, she had to figure things out and find her way through much of life on her own. Battling through depression, stress, anxiety, identity crisis, and all sorts of negativity, she expressed herself through the outlets of her talents. Every bite of her cooking is filled with love, every stroke of her art is painted with passion, and every yoga pose is held with peace.
With all the reason to hate the world, Shanique now instead uses her talents and lessons to help others find peace within themselves through the mind and body connection of yoga.
Shanique, I appreciate you, and I'm so proud to call you my friend.

I always start my class with connection. Connection to the breath, to yourself, to each other. This morning in introductions, I asked the class to share 1 fun fact about themselves with the stranger next to them! I almost couldn’t get them to start class! I loved it! So, here’s a fun fact about me - “I’m an accountant during the day, I love numbers.” (Not sure if that’s fun but yea!)

I’ve gotten a few questions recently about finding motivation and balance.
I think like anything, motivation comes and goes in waves. Some days I wake up energized and feel like a million bucks, and other days getting out of bed feels like an accomplishment.
Whatever season I’m in, I try to show up for myself. I honour rest when I really need it, and when I know I need to push myself, I do. Take this week for example, I’ve worked out once and haven’t practiced yoga since Monday. My body felt super off and I’m dealing with a few minor injuries so I decided to take it easy and honour that. But today I know I need to MOVE. So I’m honouring that with a workout and a long yoga practice. Do I feel sluggish? Absolutely. Am I going to go to the gym anyways? 100%. I know I’ll feel better, both in body and especially in mind.
So it all really boils down to really listening to your body. Be honest, and always show up for yourself first. 🖤

even though I’m no longer in a global studies program, and I have very(!!!) little money, the travel bug is still here and I can’t stop it🤪 so, I took advantage of @thembta ‘s $10 weekend pass and headed to explore Providence for the day. The @risdmuseum is free on Sundays & then I checked out @plantcitypvd (the country’s first ever plant based food hall) and fell in love💚
Sometimes, when I just don't know how to react, I show love. This may be a smile, a hug, a pat on the back, a polite nod. Sometimes, I don't know how to recover a negative situation. Often, words just won't cut it. Remember, love is an action, so show love to that person by your actions. It may take some time, but remember, time often heals wounds, minds, and the heart!

In our fourth week of #mightygirls, we discussed having a growth mindset, and not getting stuck like the Pout Pout Fish. We talked about where we feel feelings in our body, and practiced a mindfulness exercise using all five senses. We also made sugar scrub (1 cup sugar, 1/2 c coconut oil, and a few drops of essential oils). It’s important to take care of physical bodies, to allow us take care of our whole selves! We look forward to more connecting and sharing next week!

A highlight package from our Saturday morning @Kinstretch Class.
Our focus for today was the upper body, specifically the scapula and shoulder external rotation (not only in an overhead position but particularly as the arms are planted on the floor). We cycle between upper body dominant and lower body dominant from week to week during our weekly Kinstretch classes. These classes are great for you to learn more about your own body, build strength in joints that you didn’t know could produce strength, and to supplement your current fitness routine! It’ll enhance whatever else you want to do.
If the classes have got you thirsty for more joint strengthening and body control, you can join our other members who have plunged deeper in our systems by taking on one of our coaches 1-on-1.
